GOVERNOR BESHEAR PRESENTS BLUE GRASS AIRPORT WITH FRONT ENTRYWAY FUNDING

July 16, 2008 – Today Governor Steve Beshear announced Blue Grass Airport will receive an investment of $586,233 in Transportation Enhancement Program funding to be applied towards a new front entryway. This funding will assist the airport in creating an entrance reflective of the Bluegrass region’s beauty and will increase the visibility of the airport as drivers approach the entrance.

“In 2010, we will host the largest equestrian sporting event ever held in the United States,” said Governor Beshear. “It is altogether appropriate that we do everything we can to make a favorable impression on the thousands who will come to the FEI World Equestrian Games. We are pleased to partner with Blue Grass Airport on a project that will have such a positive and lasting impact on Kentucky.”

Designed to create a resemblance to the region’s prestigious horse farm entrances, the entryway design incorporates brick masonry walls, limestone capping, low dry-stacked stone walls, signature lighting fixtures and lush landscaping. The proposed materials for this project will be consistent with existing architectural styles at the airport, including its parking structure and new covered rental car facility. Construction is anticipated to be completed by Fall 2009.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the Governor and Commonwealth of Kentucky on this project,” said Bernie Lovely, Jr., Chairman of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Airport Board. “This funding will allow us to take an important step towards developing a signature experience for Blue Grass Airport passengers.”

The Transportation Enhancement Program offers federal funding for the pursuit of unique and creative approaches to the integration of transportation into Kentucky communities in an environmentally friendly way.

“We hope this new entryway will set the stage for the beauty visitors will experience during their visit to central Kentucky,” said Michael Gobb, Blue Grass Airport’s Executive Director. “Throughout the design process, our focus has been on achieving an entrance that will complement the airport, its neighbors and the region.”

Blue Grass Airport is served by six major airline brands providing convenient non-stop service to 13 major hub cities with direct service to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport proudly serves over one million central and eastern Kentucky travelers each year.
