September 17, 2009American Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, announced today that it will add non-stop service between Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport beginning in Spring 2010.

“The addition of non-stop Chicago service by American Eagle will provide our travelers convenient access to our most popular destination and will provide connecting options to hundreds of cities,” said Brian Ellestad, deputy director of air service and community relations at Blue Grass Airport. “With our existing non-stop service to Dallas and now non-stop service to Chicago, passengers will have access to the world via American’s two largest hubs. This new service will prove especially valuable for international passengers planning their itinerary to Lexington for the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.”

AMR, the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle, announced this news as one of a series of steps the company will take to better position its ability to meet the industry’s near-term economic challenges while continuing to build on its foundation and strategy for long-term success. The company has obtained a total of $2.9 billion in additional liquidity and new aircraft financing, announced plans to strengthen its network by reallocating capacity to its hubs in Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami and New York and will enhance its fleet to better serve its customers.

American has reaffirmed its commitment to Chicago as its primary Asia gateway and will start new service to Beijing, China in Spring 2010. Fifty-seven daily flights will be added to Chicago O’Hare International Airport for a total of 487 daily departures. Customers will have access to 12 new domestic destinations and three new international destinations.

“Today’s announcement positions our company well to face today’s industry challenges and allows us to remain focused on the future and on returning to profitability,” said Gerard Arpey, AMR’s Chairman and CEO.

Blue Grass Airport, the Official Airport of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, is served by six major airlines providing convenient non-stop serve to 12 major hub cities and connecting service to hundreds of destinations worldwide.
