BLUE GRASS AIRPORT FIRST RESPONDERS RECEIVE
HOMETOWN HERO AWARD
Lexington, Ky. Blue Grass Airport Public Safety
Officers James "Pete" Maupin and Jon Sallee have
been selected as the recipients of the Kentucky League of
Cities' Hometown Hero Award. The officers are receiving
this honor in recognition of saving the life of First Officer
James Polehinke in the crash of Comair Flight 5191.
"In the face of this tragedy, Officers Maupin and Sallee
gave us an enduring example of the best of the human spirita
selflessness that put the well being of others ahead of their
own safety," said Sylvia Lovely, executive director/CEO
of the Kentucky League of Cities.
This is the second time the Kentucky League of Cities has
bestowed the Hometown Hero Award since its inception in 2002.
It was established to "recognize individuals who have
demonstrated courage and commitment in public service."
The officers were honored at an awards ceremony held during
the Kentucky League of Cities 2006 Convention and Expo.
"Their quick action saved a lifeand their courage
in living up to the ideals of their professions makes them
true heroes," Lovely said. The Kentucky League of Cities
is an association of 400 Kentucky cities and municipalities,
which provides resources, advocacy and assistance to help
make cities more livable.
"It is such an honor for our officers to be recognized
for their top-notch response to this tragedy," said Michael
Gobb, executive director at Blue Grass Airport. "We are
so proud of their actions and the commitment they have made
to serve the public. They are heroes to all of us."
